McCanns give evidence to Leveson

Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 in Portugal when she was 3 years old. Four years later, her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, are giving evidence to the judge-led inquiry into media practices. Their lawyer defended that the way the media was dealing with the situation was a “national scandal”, and after admitting that both the TV and the press helping them spreading the news the parents also said that they felt overwhelmed seeing their daughter’s disappearance in every English media for so long.

I completely agree with the McCann’s; when a story is negative, is not easy to get over it if the medias are talking about it all the time. It is true that the press and the TV gave so much importance to the disappearance but we also have to admit that the parents where the first ones who wanted the medias to get involved in the situation in order to let the world know that their daughter was missing, and they also went to different TV shows to explain how bad they felt. You cannot pretend to let people know about your life and stop it when you are tired of it, if you decide to open the barrier of privacy, you have to accept the consequences. The problem here is, when it has to do with a major problem, where is the limit of the help and the limit of the privacy?

  1. I agree with you, Lucia. Once you have show your personal life to the media, you cannot put limits on it, and more if we are talking about a missing daughter. The media helped to the investigation spreading the news, as you said, and all they can do is be thankful. It is hard to see it everyday on TV, but once in the past was the best way the took in order to find their daugther.

  2. This is to a certain degree untrue. By all means the McCanns wanted their daughter back, and what better way to do so than to show as much of the world as they possibly could the face of their then three year-old daughter? Eventhough there has been some speculation that they have used the media to profit, I think that at the beginning this wasn't the case. They did not want to open their lives to the world, simply get their little girl back. However, as you have pointed out, once you open your life to the media it is very hard to close it, and it will be even harder for them to try and mourn in silence while being reminded everyday that their daughter is still missing.

  3. I also agree with you Lucia. Madeleine has been missing for almost 5 years now. The parents have been putting pressure on the press to give more and more importance to the case. First of all there was evidence found that it was the parents fault, who had left their kids unattended while they were out. Then reports were shown prooving that it could have been the parents who had had an accident and had killed little Madeleine, since they admitted to have given the kids somniferous to ease their sleep. Both McCanns were suspected because of blood found in their hire car. I believe what the parents are trying to do is take the heat out of the case so that they close it before they find more evidence.
