Free speech in Mexico; Be careful with what you Tweet

The article in question is raising awareness of the dangers that face the media in Mexico when addressing the matter of gang culture and violence. So much that in the space of four years 37 journalists were killed or went missing. The citizens have no alternative but to voice their opinions through the Internet on sites such as Twitter, Facebook or Blogs. This too carries it consequences with innocent by-standers being tracked down and murdered for venting their frustrations at the matter. These social networking sites bring there benefits; people in some areas of Northern Mexico are using them as a median to make people aware of any disturbances that are currently happening so people can stay out of harms reach.

I take the view that the situation that has gripped Mexico is nothing more than ludicrous. People should be able to have a sense of security and safety in their communities and homes. Activity on the Internet and the freedom of speech is something that should be a given, not a matter that could be met with consequences as grave as death. It has become impossible to speak out about the troubles that are taking place on their doorsteps, solidity is a necessity in such areas, individuals voices are easier to be muted out by an impetulant murder when compared to a choir of a community.

  1. I totally agree with you Carol. It is completely unacceptable that there is no freedom of speech anywhere in the world. Mexicans living in such conflicting areas need to express their feelings and let everyone know what is really going on their country. It shouldn't be a risk for them to do so.

  2. I regret that events like these happen as well. I think that there is still something like "freedom of speech", and as long as you don't hurt anyone physically or mentally, or you don't quote others without their permission, you can say whatever you like about what is on your mind. It is such a shame that people still get punished for saying how they feel. I think if the whole world would still work like this, it would be a messy place to live in, because when everyone could just violate others for saying what they think or feel, we would have a lot more damages.

  3. I think just like you Carol. Freedom of speech never has to be something that carries consequences as extreme as death. In general, as long as you say what you think in the most respectful possible way of saying it, it shouldn't be taken as a destructive critique but as a constructive critique. And specially with the case of Mexico, like Clara said, all the fear, suffering and pain of their daily lives, those deaths are so near to them. They can't be killed for just saying what they feel.

  4. I believe in Human Rights and freedom of speech is a part of this. Everybody should be able to say what they think, concern and worry about without fear of being killed. It seems a basic human right to think for oneself. Explaining, complaining and criticizing in a most respectful way should be enough and should not be taken as dismissing a certain opinion but rather ensuring that one´s opinion is still heard, appreciated and taken into account; people should be tolerant and learn from one another because that is the way that people and countries are enriched in more humane and democratic forms.
